If your soul belongs to music Your Lie in April will speak to you

Your Lie in April is an anime that anyone who likes emotional dramas with strong romantic elements will enjoy, cherish, and connect strongly to. It hits so many elements on the emotional ladder that it probably qualifies as a drama, although I don't believe it was recommended to me by Netflix based on its dramatic elements. It is also something that musicians who are into anime should definitely watch due to music being one of the main themes in this anime series.

Your Lie In April is a romcom sort of anime that has an upbeat start that is easy to get sucked into

I started watching Your Lie in April the other day, and, surprisingly it sucked me in like very little I’ve watched has nowadays. But my lack of interest in media is a different story. The story today is about how much this show touched the tiny musician drowning in my soul.

Hate to spoil it for you, so, I’ll try to skim around the details that make this lovely anime what it has been so far. So…as briefly as I can manage of a summary, the TV show is about a middle school boy who loses total interest in playing the piano after his mother dies. His mother is kind of, actually, really batshit, and abusive as fuck, and totally obsessed with her son being an amazing pianist, which, the way he plays within the TV show, I can’t blame her for wanting the best for him, because he has the hands of a god. So, he meets this violinist and she’s free spirited as hell and pushes him to be better (this is what I’ve gleaned so far as I have not finished this TV series quite yet).

Now that that you have a bit of backstory for those who haven’t yet seen it…

This quote: “This silence belongs to us, and every single person out there is waiting for us to fill it with something.” Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. And with a couple of tweaks, this could apply to most any art form from dancers having an empty stage to fill with movement, painters and drawers having blank canvases and paper, sculptors having a lump of clay or a chunk of metal waiting to be turned into art. That is what makes this quote so great to me. Actually, it can also describe everyday life; everyone has such and such amount of years to write their own stories. Now that I talk about stories, I remember that I totally left out writers and blank paper and those dreaded blinking cursors of the empty word processors waiting for frantic scribbles, dancing words, and bleeding poetry to stain them.

Also, without spoiling the treat, I think that this anime shows music in a very realistic light. Music for dedicated musicians is something that takes over your life and transforms you. The lovely pianist, upon observing the free-spirited violinist notes that she seems to be two different people: a regular, somewhat obnoxious girl off-stage, and a powerful, wild magician with an instrument onstage.

Even so few episodes in, I have witnessed from these lovely and supportive characters that one must give oneself to the music and everything will be okay.

I Finished Watching Your Lie In April and I am now devastated and ready to lie down and die

Okay… I’ve literally been dreading finishing this TV show because I knew pretty early on how it was going to go and I was not ready for the emotional trauma of actually watching it. So I sucked it up the other day and watched the other half of it in two nights where I was both devastated and pleased about how the rest of the story went. I’m going to rank this in my top five anime probably right next to Avatar: The Last Airbender. I cried about 17 times with the blanket held up to my face and tried to yelling at the characters to tell them what they were supposed to not be doing in order to have the beautiful ending that my heart desired.

Obviously, they didn’t listen to me which is only okay because I connected to the story so much.

Your Lie in April is an anime that will change you

My BRIEF conclusion is that Your Lie in April is an anime that anyone who likes emotional dramas with strong romantic elements will enjoy, cherish, and connect strongly to. It hits so many elements on the emotional ladder that it probably qualifies as a drama, although I don’t believe it was recommended to me by Netflix based on its dramatic elements. I also feel like Netflix’s recommendation algorithm is trash at matching people with TV shows and movies, so it’s a miracle that I even came across Your Lie in April.

It is intense, excellently written, with amazing voice actors, gorgeous visuals and a storyline that is both creative but relatable to so many children who have studied music. You do not have to be a musician to enjoy this anime, but I do believe there is a stronger connection that may be felt to it if you happen to be a musician. This is coming from someone who plays piano, drums, and viola. Like anything that is a strong part of your life, you will be able to forge a certain depth of connection with others who share your same interests. It is the same with Your Lie in April. The way Kaori Miyazono

describes the feeling of playing the violin is both enchanting and haunting and the ongoing metaphor that compares musical elements to the lives of Kaori and Kousei is extremely heartbreaking and poignant.

Get your snacks and your hanky ready. This is a binge-worthy anime that will leave you forever changed.

What if Peter Pan was black? Black kids can't go to Neverland? What if Peter isn't the star of this story? In this retelling of an old classic, my "Wendy" runs the show. It's like Disney but with a lot more darkness and a lot more girl power. It's...Neverland by Maple Summers.

Do you see shadows in the daylight? If not, let this poetry collection take you to a new place where dreams are not dreams and nightmares are the beginning of all things fantastical. Not only ghouls and goblins can scare you. Fear can take the shape of your favorite uncle or your father. Horror can happen in the daylight. This is what Nightmares, Night Scares, Daydreams will show you. Maple Summers’ second poetry collection will bend your way of thought with its new usage of familiar words. She will bring you to a different realm of a new reality, a place of hopes and dreams and fantastic failure. She explores more familial relations, while also talking about romantic relationships in a new way. She speaks on friendship, fear, retribution, loss, bitterness, and emotional decay. Shedding light on controversial issues and her place as an African-American minority in a white society, Summers also delves into the darkness without fear that you will see the darkness inside of her. She wishes to share that with you in a way that will bind you together. She will show you the fear of living and the fear of death and also explore self-reflection and the meaning of self-confidence. Wishing to challenge you to think of words in a new way, a noun is not always a noun, as Nelson bends the rules of grammar by riddling this poetry with a naturally free flowing hand of colorful language. And she does not leave out the sex. She takes taboo sexual issues and drags them into the light forcing you to confront things that you may not want to think about. But there are others out there suffering too. And Nelson is here to tell you that you are not alone. She speaks directly to the reader without fluffed language or nonsensical fanfare. This is Halloween where we are all dressing as someone else but all we want is to be ourselves. How do you think of Halloween? Lori Jenessa tackles the question, speaking about the holiday itself and what it represents to her. And just for ghoulish fun and witchery, she has also included fun spells that are a little more than just magic. They are flashlights of her personal insights. Let her share this journey with you. Welcome, sweet dears, to Nightmares, Night Scares, Daydreams.

Playing the tank drum is a spiritual thing that frees you. Its sound echoes and its vibrations heal and give you the feeling that they are soaking into you like warm water. Absorb these vibrations through your ears and feel them in your heart. I imagine that I am invoking the spirits of somebody’s ancestors. The ones who were kind, yet strong, peace-loving, but fierce and protective of others. Ones who believe in hearts and souls and the importance of being forgiving and unforgiving. Isn’t life about balance? I reach for balance with every note and beat of the drum. There are highs and lows, quick songs and slower ones. Sometimes I can’t help myself. After I get warmed up, I tend to play faster and faster, but isn’t that another reflection of the rhythm of life?

I hope that this music gives you a taste of some freedom. That it takes you out of yourself and the world and lets you float. Maybe it will be the soundtrack to your feelings of peace and relaxation, and you, like every note that lifts from the drum, will become air.
